What Is the Special Enrollment Period?

The SEP allows you to sign up for or change your health insurance plan outside of the regular enrollment period, as long as you’ve experienced a qualifying life event.

Here are some common qualifying events:

• Losing your current coverage: This includes losing job-based insurance, no longer qualifying for Medicaid or CHIP, or turning 26 and aging out of your parents’ plan.
• Household changes: Getting married, having a baby, adopting a child, or losing a family member.
• Moving: Changing your ZIP code or county, or moving to or from a place where you study or work.
• Other situations: Becoming a U.S. citizen, being released from incarceration, or a significant change in income.

It’s important to act quickly—you only have 60 days after the qualifying event to enroll in a new plan. If you miss this window, you might have to wait until the next Open Enrollment Period.
